Default carrier bearing preload

So this past weekend I blew the diff in my 66 so the new unit arrived today and it's all set up in the vise and back lash set and carrier adjusters are snugged down to obtain proper backlash so my question is what is carrier bearing preload set to on these removable carriers???....Randy's ring and pinion the place where I got this HD unit said they set preload using a breakerbar and a pole attached to it to tighten down as tight as you can??? not sure on that??? anyway what is reccommended spec or is this the case, = tight as you can so distortion under load doesn't occur, any articles are appreciated, thanks guys

I'm suprised no one knows the answer to this, anyway I actually found a old ford manual at work that detailed very well how to do it and it wasn't all that bad, and this afternoon after work , got her back together and she roars again, so if anyone ever needs to know how to set carrier preload on side bearings in a removable carrier just ask me

What they are talking about with the breaker bar is more likely the crush sleeve, which is pinion bearing pre-load, not for carrier bearings. The side adjusters should be set with the correct gear mesh and backlash, then loosen one side up (the adjusters) and retighten it to zero lash. Then turn each side about 1/8 of a turn more (tighten) and that should be good (you turn each side the same amount so that it stays where you want it). I don't know what the exact specs are to be honest. I have a book, but its at home, and Im at work. I usually just feel of it by hand when I build them. Thy should have a slight drag to them, but turn smoothly.

yeah that's sort of the way to do it^^^^^^^what you do is take the left side down to 0 backlash and keep right side semi loose and tighten it snug once 0 back lash is achieved then back left side off 1 hole distance and then tighten right side until bearing race starts to turn then put 2 holes tighter = I used a reference point on case and each hole was 1 and then back it off until race stops turning then go 2 holes tighter= preload set , then check backlash, if good then torque caps and install locks,...I've done tons of 8.8 rear gear instals but only a hand full of removable carrier set ups and it had been about 2 years since the last one so I had forgotten, thanks for the input tyler!!
