Default Starting Issues...

Hi all,

I'm new to the forums but I was hoping to ask some questions on a Starting issue I'm having.

I have a 1966 coupe 289. For a while now it's had some starting issues that have progressively gotten worse. The engine turns over a long while and then starts after a few minutes. This seems to only happen in the morning times when it's cold outside or when it's sat without running for more than a day or so. Once it starts it usually dies unless I rev the engine for a bit. Then, once it is running fairly well I stick it in gear, step on the gas, and nothing... It's like the gas isnt getting pumped. But, after a few minutes of running she's fine and all those problems go away and she drives wonderfully.

I'm suspecting it's a fuel pump issue (a mechanical one is currently installed) and I was thinking of replacing with a new electrical pump. Am I heading in the right direction? What else do you think it could be?

i had a bike do this to me for a while, turned out to be weak spark.

other things I checked were carb adjustments, and air flow.

basically i would start with a complete tune up.

Welcome to driving a carburated car. First, push the throttle down 1-2 times prior to starting cold. It should start right up and run fast. Blip the throttle after a minute and the idle should start coming down to normal.
Now if you don't get a start, you most likely have a choke problem (that's the plate in the top of the carb throat) you need to remove the air cleaner and without the COLD engine running, move the throttle lever. The plate should flip up and completely close. If not it's out of adjustment. if so, it should barely open when the engine is started, if not its a bad pull off.
