Default Neutral Safety Switch

Have a 68 convert. I can't start the car in neutral. What's involved in fixing the neutral safety switch?

replacing it would be advisable if it's original. personally myself i have mine disconnected so it can start in any gear.

I about took out my garage door that way. Carb was stuck open as I was starting the motor. Lucky I had a foot on the brake and a quick wrist on the key.

does that mean you can start it in park?
if you can start it in park I wouldn't change anything.
I believe some auto trans gearboxes allow starting in park and neutral and some allow only park position

have you tried adjusting it? My 66 wouldn't start in park when I first bought it. Assuming you have C4, down on the shifter mechanism, drivers side, rotate the half-moon switch clockwise or counter clockwise to adj. it's held in place by two 7/16 bolts. Replacing it should be fairly easy by removing the shifter lever and sliding the unit off. follow the wiring, you might be lucky and locate a harness disconnect, otherwise break out the soldering gun and shrinkwrap. Always use a NSS, that's why they call it a safety switch.

you can jumper the wires in the connector at the firewall to test if that is your issue. If you jumper the saftey wires and it starts, you know you need to either replace or adjust the switch. If it does not start, then the switch is not your issue. Some times, the connector itself goes bad. I redid mine with a MSD weatherproof connector because of that issue.
