The one I have is metal. Installation kit sucked and wheel was just a tad too small for me. Felt like I was driving a go-kart. I have the original on again. I'm getting a wood one sometime next year.

Hate pulling the wheel, the first time I did my 66 I used my hands and a lot of muscle- it was not fun! I recall ending up beating it off with a iron mallet - love the mallet!

You may or may not need a wheel puller. I would give it a wack and see if it falls off. If so, you are set to go. Not all Grant wheels are crap and I'm sure that they are many to choose from. I have two in use and they are the best feeling wheel of all that I have. They make more than one size and style.

It's not the wheel itself that's usually the problem, it's the horn design. Grant's horn design has never changed, and it's always sucked.

I'm sure the rubber/steel Grant wheels are solid, and a good value for $115-$120, but the wood version sucks big time.

The wheel is real wood, which has to be much thicker than the orig wheel in order for it not to crack, so it has a thick, uncomfortable feel you can't see in photos. Some of the rivets that hold the front and back wood pieces to the steel ring loosen with time making the wood pieces feel loose. The horn smacks of a cheap toy made in Hong Kong. The horn stopped working 1255 idiots-cutting-me-off ago, and the center cap likes to pop off when I hit a bump and lodge itself under my brake pedal while I'm doing 40. The product is total crap.

Next time a cop nails you for exhibition of speed ($500) for chirping your rubber, send him one of these wheels as a gift.

I got the repo from California Mustang. It's actually plastic wood grain, which looks and feels better than real wood, and will not crack. I haven't received it yet, but I've seen this wheel at shows and I can't tell the difference from the orig part.

I paid $280 for the wheel, but you can get it for $250-$260 on ebay. Since the vendor is easier to deal with in case anything is defective or doesn't fit right, I chose the more expensive wheel with garunteed support. The center cap is sold separately.

I'm getting the 65-66 pony option woodgrain wheel that takes a steel center cap. The 67 wood grain wheel has the padded center cap. pads come in 6 interior colors.

I've dealt with over 40 parts vendors over the last 17 years, and California Mustang consistantly has the best service and prices. Since I live in California, I have to pay sales tax (avoidable with a vendor out of state), but they are still a better vendor.

Also, I got a wheel puller on ebay for $9. I'll stop back to this thread when the new wheel is installed. Thanks everybody for the input.

Carlos

never had a big problem with my grant wheel. only minor thing was that the little metal cup that fits behind the wheel was rubbing, but washers fixed that. i want to make my own though
