Default where to start

New here.

To make a long story short, the wife has always wanted a convertible mustang. She is having a rough year and I need a winter project so I am starting to look.

Not well trained on classics or Fords but I will be reading alot. I am kind of leaning towards 67-68 convertible, v8, auto, PS, PB, A/C, car. Would consider swapping in full drivetrain of FI 302 or 4.6 with Auto and 4 wheel disc. No power adders, just stock, reliable, automatic, simple, great sounding exhaust.

Have already read its best to start with a v8 car. I imagine someone has converted over to a modern drivetrain, full wiring harness, 4 wheel disc. I am guessing its easier to start with a PS, PB car and upgrade to modern stuff. Yes or no?

Is this too big of a project? Recommedations? Did I say anything that sounded like a noob,...because I am. Any links to posts on this already being done?

I have found that it takes more that one season to complete a project of this magnatude, unless you just have $ to throw at it.

And yes, start witha a v8 car. that way you dont need to convert it from 4 lug to 5 lug. 67=68 are probably my favorite years. Everything you listed above are common upgrades to these cars.
If you want to go efi then you can just get the manifold and the injection parts along with the cpu and install it right on to your factory 302 if you wish. If you get a v8 car than it may be better to keep the original motor if it is in good shape and just add on the new stuff from a fox body stang.
another great thing to concider is a t5 5 speed trans if you want a manual trans. if not the factory auto should suffice if you are keeping it mostly stock.

Power adders can also add milage and drivabilty to the othwise poor performing factory goods.

you may also want to upgrade the suspension, IE shocks, control arms, ball joints, bushings, and springs. these are wear items that i have found common to fail.

the v8 isnt my biggest concern its the body, spend more money on the body and save a fortune in the long run

i also see you have a turbo car, ever thought about taking the six adding efi and putting a turbo on it? now that id like to see

If you look around, you will find this car near done as you described. Depending on how much you want to work/save, you can build your convert easily. Also think about a '69, which is a little roomier and more comfortable.

Looks like you are in for some fun. Definately start with a V-8 car, it will be much easier than swapping everything out to support that motor. Like monster billy said, you could put in a T-5 and it would be pretty nice for highway driving or you could even go with an automatic overdrive transmission, which seems to be a pretty popular choice now days.. What is your budget to start off with, how much do you want to pay to buy the car and how much do you plan on spending on it?

Here's a coupe in Phili.. http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/cto/838998240.html

You will be able to find a car, just keep patient and wait for it to come around. Search craigslist and your local paper and ebay from time to time..

Thank you all.

This preliminary information is INVALUABLE.

Nice find on craigslists. Has to be an automatic for the wife. We have fought over this for 15 years and a gear rower is just not going to work.
