Its the repro letters that SUCK. My original letters were lined up perfect, but the chrome wall all cracked and dull so I got new ones. With two of my letters I had to cut off the pegs on them and double side tape them to the trunk because it was so crooked. My S was almost at like a 30° angle and I think my N was the other off one.
One day I'll get my originals re-chromed, or just wait until they make better repro's
While we are on this topic I though Id ask a question. The letter A on the back of my 69 is a little loose, it can be pulled out little ways before something stops it from coming off completely. I think mine are orginal. I was wondering how these letters are held in place and how I can fix my loose letter A.
Thanks!
On my 70 they just push-in and pull-out with nothing on the other side of them (nuts, washers, clips etc..)They do have rubber or plastic around the holes in the trunk and squeeze together when you push them in.Try gently pulling it out without scratching the paint.
cp.......Is the red vert a 68? My rear reflectors don't look like that. Mine are slimmer with kind of rounded edges.
There were two style rear quarter reflectors in '68 - early and late '68 model year. Initially, there were indentations in the quarters for early '68's and Ford decided to save some money by changing the side marker to one that sits on the panel instead of inside an indentation. Those could be repop quarters or a previous owner may have deleted the markers sometime in the last 40 years.
Here's a pic showing both '68 rear quarter markers.

Get a few barrel nuts from an online mustang parts vendor. They're, like, 35 cents each. It what holds all your letters and emblems. They just pop in. The top one on your A is loose from people drying and polishing the car for 40 years.
The inside of the barrel nut is ribbed (yes, for the letter post's pleasure), to grab the post. Just carefully pry the letter off with a claw, but don't crack your paint.
PS: if you buy replacement letters or emblems with posts (not stick-on), they come with barrel nuts sometimes. Ask.
