Default Voltage Regulator. Dash ground

So tonight trying to get my failing alternator to work and come to find out I had a few problems. 1) the thing was shorting out on my valve cover. 2) the old wiring is not the same as the new wiring had to rewire some 3) a ground wire was having too much resistance, had to rewire that too 4) the voltage regulator was bad, had to buy a new one. (add that to the list) 5) I guess there is supposed to be a wire that leads inside the car that is supposed to act as a relay. Runs from the voltage regulator to the dash?? I've NEVER had a wire run that way, and my old alternator worked just fine. Does anyone know about this? Also does anyone know where, or can send a picture of where the grounds are on the dash? My dash isn't working, the dimmer switch is good, checked that, but nothing else is working and I'd LOVE to have that work, since it hasn't since I've gotten the car. All the fuses and bulbs have also been replaced so it's not those either. Has to be a ground.
