i used to think "keep all the original parts just in case", but really....you convert your car to an 8 cylinder....scrap the 6. nobody wants 'em, nobody's gonna want 'em, and for originality?? your car was originally a 6 cylinder mustang... convertible or not... you keep shelby's and hipo's and mach's and boss's original because they're worth so much. you do whatever you want with an original 6 cylinder car. that's the beauty of owning a car like yours. you don't have to be **** and save everything and have the "paint ok" stamp in the right place and...... you can do what you want without ruining the value of what you have, a cool classic Mustang.

Check in your area for racing shops that install turbos.

I wouldn't try to install a turbo yourself (or your brother inlaw). Stick to headers, intake and a bigger carb, there are already kits for the I6 and i hear they give good results.

Some info on turbo 6s:

6 cyl mustangs are rare. In 67 about 30% of mustangs were 6cyl. That has been lowered due to the people that swap the engine. In 68 there were about 29%. Those are less also.

there are 2 factors in determining value. rarity and desirability. the reason that only 30% of 67's are 6's is because everybody wanted an 8. i'm not bashing the ol' 200, but fact is, a 67 6 cyl will never be more desirable than an 8.

1. Keep the 6, no matter what.

2. One option: Keep the 6 in your garage and drop a small block V8 in your car.

3. Another option: Keep the 6 in the car, and build hp & torque around it.

4. And of course: Opt to do nothing. Drive it like it is.

If you opt for a V8, remember that your wheels, brakes and suspension may have to be modified as well.

A turboed 6 will not beat a V8.

Think about how you will actually drive the car. Gas usage might be important, etc.

Good luck. Please don't separate ownership of the 6 with the owner of the car.

When I bought my car I thought it was a Mach 1 at first with a 351W. I found out shortly after that it was just a plain sportroof with a modified 302 (yeah I know I'm not mechanically inclined).

Now if it had been a Mach 1 with the original engine I probably would have been careful on what I changed out.

Knowing now that it's a regular sportroof and ALOT of things are far from original (or even ford products) I'm going to restomod it b/c I will be able to enjoy it more.

I'm all into protecting/perserving history, but if you're wanting to drive and enjoy it do what you want with it.

Huh? there are production 4 and 6s that will beat v8s, Porsche turbo carrera is a v6 is one example.
Many race cars, like formula and champ series are 4 and 6 cylinders.
They're often over 700hp.

It all depends on how much boost you give it, and how well your engine can take it.

I was talking with my grandfather and he had 6cyls that would beat 6-pack V8s. 6cyl engines have more torque than a V8, so off the line a 6cyl would win.

Default Keep it!

I just spent about an hour getting to know my I6, and I'm keeping it! I'm no mechanic, and I'm also no dragster, so for cruising with the top down, gas mileage, and simplicity of repairs so I can actually keep cruising, I'm glad my car has a 6. I just made a list of everything (?) I need to get it running. Now it's off to the catalogs!

Thanks for the info. Of course you can easily produce significant HP with a 6 if you work on it so you're right.
