Default Keep Original or Replace Engine

My 68 convertible has the original 6 cyl 200ci engine and C4 tranny. Engine runs good but would run better with a decent carb.

Everybody I talk to says don't rebuild the original engine, buy a 289 or 302.

I say where can I find a 1968 289 or 302?

They say don't buy old, buy new crate engine.

I say car's value would be more with original engine and tranny, since all data plate numbers match, etc., etc.

So, what makes the car worth more?

Keep the old engine. If you do upgrade to a V8, make sure that any mods you do can be undone easily. Any parts you take off, keep them. You never know. This stuff only gets harder to find.

If you upgrade to a V8 you need to upgrade the suspension to the V8 setup as well, it's not just a simple operation.

do some mods to the inline 6 such as a header and a couple carbs or something. it'll definitely get you more attention than a stock v8!!! there's a book called "falcon performance handbook" that has a bunch of ideas. or check out http://www.fordsix.com/ or www.cliffordperformance.net

Definatly keep the six in the car, a good header, head, carb but not too much carb, cam and ect. A six will make the power, it just takes a little work.

+1 Keep the original engine in the car it will be worth more. (if you plan on selling it)
You may want to upgrade with headers/carb/ignition if you plan on driving more then just to car shows.
If you want something that is modified to your liking and how you want to drive it,then replace the engine with something more modern and powerful. You will have to upgrade the suspension aswell, After all YOUown the car and drive it.If you want others to see a classic restoration of an original Mustang then rebuild it back to stock and trailer it to car shows.

Keep the 6. The guys at Classic Inlines were featured in Mustang Monthly a while back. They can get 200 HP out of a 6 Cyl.

If you have some time call the guys at Cliifford. (Time because they will talk your ear off). These guys live, breath and love the I6.

I added their headers to my I6 with a dual exhaust. It looks and sounds great.
