Default 68 Convertible well chrome strip

Hey all, first post and need some help.
I realize that there is no replacements available for the chrome strip that goes around the well where the top folds into. This is also the trim that the boot tucks under on a 68. Prior years had the snap buttons that the boot snaps to.

My question, my chrome strip is in good shape, it has clips with threaded studs that go into the body. When the previouis owner repainted the car they used silicone to hold down the strip. What should be holding it down? It looks like to me it should be nuts on the studs or some kind of speed clip that slide onto the studs. Any idea? NPD and Harris Mustang (Charlotte) have been unable to help.

Thanks,
Craig

I rec'd the latest Cjponyparts catalog today, and thought this would be an easy find. They did not have anything listed for the 68. They called them conv. top boot molding, but only 64-66. I would assume the speed clip for 68, but not positive.

Thanks noroof, I stopped by NPD today again, they have a nut with a wide base that I thought would work but its the wrong thread pitch and is made for 64-66. Thread pitch looks to be 10-32 on the studs. I'll keep looking, I'll figure something out. I guess because convertible sales were so low in 68 no one is making this part. Your 66 looks great.....what size wheels you have on there?

Thanks for the compliment. The wheels are pretty old, I got them around 12 years ago. They are 15" (cool back then). Tires are 245/60/15

I'm struggling a little with the wheel issue. Want to stay stock, 14" styled steel but I'm not crazy about 14" tires.

Do you have the boot trim strip off the car? Go to your hardware store and find the 10-32 stainless nuts and washers or try the aluminum hollow nuts that have a built in washer(can't remember what they call those). Don't tighten it too much - just snug plus a scitch - or it will show on the outside.

Yep, got it and its in good shape. I got some stainless nuts and washers but havent tried them yet. Been busy working on the front floorboards (not too bad, could have been much worse). I think it originally had the aluminum speed nuts or hollow nuts. There is not a lot of the stud that sticks thru. Will give it a shot though. Thanks for the help. By the way, your 67 looks great. I've always been partial to red. Ours is Brittany Blue.

Thanks for the compliment and your welcome!

Why not post a photo(s) of your car. I'm not sure what Brittany Blue looks like. I've seen Acapulco, Diamond, Nightmist, Columbine and Presidential Blues. (not a pun, I swear)

Is Brittany Blue that light silvery metallic blue?

Think 'carolina blue' if that means anything to you all up there in MA! Thats as close as I can describe it. I'll get a picture up soon.
