Default Carb cleaner got my carb really dirty . . .

I bought a gallon of Napa brand carb cleaner, and after leaving the main body in it for a few days, I pull it out to find that it is covered in a layer of dark goo. Spots that were previously clean are now dirty. It comes off with a bit of scrubbing, but it would take me a looong time to scrub and spray every nook and cranny. Does anyone know of any other, CHEAP cleaners I could use? Should I soak it in gasoline, paint thinner, break fluid?

the carb is dissasembled? mabeye a bit of rubber was left on causing residue?
i used one of those gallon parts/dedreasers with no problem. cant remember which one off the top of my head. ill add it here when i do.
i dont see how gas could hurt the carb if its all taken apart.

There was no rubber/gasket left. Every mated surface had been scraped. I'm guessing it somehow took the small amount of grit that was in the carb, dissolved it, and spread it . . ?

A COUPLE OF DAYS!?

Here's how you use carb cleaner. You will need a bucket in addition the to the carb cleaner bucket.

With fresh carb cleaner, as you were using, leave the parts in the basket, submerged in the solution no longer than OVERNIGHT. Fill your other bucket with the hottest water you can get. Pull the basket out of the carb cleaner submerge it in the hot water for about five minutes. Move the basket gently up and down and then bring it out.

By using hot water, the parts will dry quickly without using compressed air losing the small parts. You can THEN take the main body and other major parts immediately out of the basket that just came out of the hot water and blow them out well with compressed air AWAY from the small parts.

By leaving the main body in there for so long and not rinsing, you probably ate through the coating in some places.

Hope this helps.

Maybe, but the carb is aluminum, so even dissolved it's not going to cause a grimy residue to build up. I suspect that's just from leftover gunk in the carb that got dissolved. I think he's fine, he just needs to clean the residue off.

I'd just spray it down with brakeclean, that stuff will dissolve about anything.
