Default Head Light Problems

When I sit in the driveway with the engine running and the head lights on everything looks Ok. However, as soon as I increase the rpm the headlights start to oscillate between bright and dim. The higher the rpm the faster the oscillation. This happens whether its in park or driving down the road. Any ideas?

Just a thought, but it may be your voltage regulator. I'd reccomend going to your local parts store and see if they can test it for you.

I had that same problem with my '68 fastback... I replaced the regulator at least 4 times, alternator 4 or 5 times. It would work for about a week, then come back worse than ever.

If a new regulator does'nt fix yours, try this...

What finally fixed mine was cleaning up the contacts. Here is what I did:

1) find a cotter pin small enough to fit inside the round connectors.
2) slide a small piece of 600 - 1000 grit sandpaper in the cotter pin, then wrap it so the sandpaper is on the outside.
3) insert into the connector and spin until the contact is clean.

Your male contacts are easy to clean by just hitting them with a wire brush dremmel or sandpaper.
(also make sure you put some dielectric grease on the contacts to keep them from corroding on you... you can find small tubes at any Autozone/Murrays, whatever)

I did that to each one of the standard connectors in the engine compartment.

Look under your dash and find where your harness comes in from the engine compartment... there will be two or three connectors... clean those up the same way.

Regulator harness... I pulled each pin out of the connector one by one and cleaned them up. A small flat screwdriver will release the pin for you. (Make sure you do one at a time, otherwise you might crosswire something.)

After all of that, my pulsating lights went away for good.

(If you need pictures of any of that to explain it better, I can hook you up. Lemme know if you have any trouble.)

C!

I agree with clutch.....you have grounding problems. Start with the headlights, and work your way back toward the firewall, cleaning any and all places where there is a ground.
