AOD conversion question

I have read somewhere that there is a difference between the 80-87 and 88 on up AOD transmissions. Can someone tell me when they went AODE and what the other differences are.

I can think of a couple of ways that might work.

You may be able to count the number of "thread starts" if you can mark one of them and turn the output shaft exactly one turn. The drive gear looks like a normal thread, but it's really several separate threads twisted together. The number of separate threads is the "tooth count".

A variation would be to place the point of an ice pick or similar pointy thing in the very beginning of one groove. Turn the output shaft exactly once. Count the number of grooves between where the pick started and where it ended up. Include either the start groove or the finish groove, but not both.

Having a helper on hand might be useful.

You'll have to let us know if you can make either of those methods work. I'm just brainstorming a bit here.
