Have you had the heads machined to fit the Windsor block yet? If so how much did it cost you?

Ok, so a 302 with a 351Cleveland head.

Comments and Questions:

1. You know that a good 302 head is going to perform better than a 351C head on a 302 right? It is cool if you are shooting for a clone with era original stuff, I just want you to know that is not the best option from a performance standpoint.

2. To build a Boss 302, you got to have good parts because you are going to spin that thing high. How high do you want you rev limit to be 9k, 10k, 11k rpm? With Cleveland heads you are going to need to cruise at 5k just to get air flow .

3. What horsepower range were you hoping for and at what rpm? That is going to greatly affect your cam.

4. Have you already found a 302 block and machined it to take Cleveland heads?

5. What is your budget?

6. Do you want a roller or flat cam and lifters?

7. You need to think girdles!!! If you are going to spin this, you need to stabilize everything including but not limited to the lowerend main caps, rocker studs, valve pan, etc.

Shoot us back some info on the above questions and these guys can get you on your way to a plan.

Actually he shouldn't need to machine the block, the heads will bolt directly on. The problem is that the Cleveland had a dry intake so holes have to be drilled in the heads to allow coolant to flow to the intake.

I knew you guys would be on top of that. I know very little about the specifics of a Clevor setup.

I ran some quick numbers for Aussie 4V Cleveland heads on a 302 and a 246 duration @.050 roller cam. It is peaking at 425hp@7k and 375ft*lbs@5k. That is with a dual plane. If you put a single plane intake, it increases by about 25hp but does not affect the curve much. Also looks like you will need a 700cfm carb to handle the air flow at those rpm levels, which means that it is not going to run below 30000 with a damn because the air flow and toque is very low below that. Max VE is going to be around 89%. Looks like you will need to shift at around 8500 to get the most out of the performance.

Does that sound about right for your plan?

If you're going to go to all the effort of making a Clevor engine, I would suggesting getting a 351W block. It should help you out on the bottom end, and since you'll be replacing the crank, pistons and possibly the connecting rods you might want to get a stroker kit. A Boss 408 would be pretty bad-***.

^ i've wanted to build a "boss" 408 for a long, long time.

urban did you do the math on that motor with the 4v large port heads or the smaller 2v (or aussie 4v heads)? i just want to make sure you were aware of the difference between the US and Aussie heads.

i want to use era original stuff for the most part so i dont wanna use aftermarket heads although i know they would help

2. To build a Boss 302, you got to have good parts because you are going to spin that thing high. How high do you want you rev limit to be 9k, 10k, 11k rpm? With Cleveland heads you are going to need to cruise at 5k just to get air flow .

i only plan to spin it to around 7-7500ish if that, cause with the aussie heads its a 2v port and a closed combustion chamber

3. What horsepower range were you hoping for and at what rpm? That is going to greatly affect your cam.

Hopefully more than 350ish im not shooting for huge numbers, but i wont complain if it makes more

4. Have you already found a 302 block and machined it to take Cleveland heads?

no need to machine the block i dont think. i have a 66 289 block

5. What is your budget?
hopefully 3500 tops but im sure that it'll be more LOL

6. Do you want a roller or flat cam and lifters?
flat

7. You need to think girdles!!! If you are going to spin this, you need to stabilize everything including but not limited to the lowerend main caps, rocker studs, valve pan, etc.

i shouldnt need to much cause im not spinning it 9k + but a main girdle im sure i will get.

can you enlighten me on what the help with rocker studs will help and whatnot?

Shoot us back some info on the above questions and these guys can get you on your way to a plan.

this will me my first complete engine build, but i have replaced heads etc before. and a buddy that built mud bog engines will be helping me if not a pro stock engine team (late model) then run in the PASS tour so they know what there doing most likely be the other guy though it WILL get put together right

thanks!

i had a hard time finding a set, but i swore someone made them still. any chance your block will clean up @ std bore?

if the 255 crank was lighter than the 302 crank you were talking about its probably a 2MA which is the same as the later 302 cranks (which took the 50 oz balancer and flexplate). been awhile, so i could be totally wrong but i think im on track here
