Default speedometer cable

Does anyone have any good pictures or a good description of how the speedometer cable is run from the dash to the transmission? I did not take any good pictures of this when I was taking apart my 67 convertible. I just put the transmission back in and could use some help with this. Also, if anyone knows what size hardware is used to bolt the speed gear into the transmission that would also be helpful.

Thanks

Not sure on the bolt size, but my cable runs out of the firewall behind the clutch pedal, over the top of the bellhousing, over the headers, then around to the tranny. You need to tie it up though because if it hits the exhaust it will kill it. It took use a few doh moments and a few cables to remember that!

Does the gear end of the cable on a manual transmission connect on the passenger side? I have an automatic and the hole in the transmission is on the driver's side. It does not seem correct to take it over the bell housing and around the tranny.

I have a manual toploader tranny and the hole is on the passenger side. Disregard what I said.

simply depends with what gearbox you have in there. if the pickup is right, the pickup is right., never seen a box with two speedo pickups. so don't worry about that.

what I said in my post with "pulled it out of the gearbox" I hope it's not misunderstood. I don't mean the cable (the outer shell in which the speedo wire is in) pulled out of gearbox, I meant the inner wire inside the cable pulled out of gearbox.
If that's the case you can push the wire right back in while twisting the wire and pushing towards gearbox.

as for the routing. It goes to firewall. There down to the pedal area. There it leaves the firewall and goes outside of firewall under car and from there to gearbox

Is there anything I should make sure the speedometer cable does not touch? I put it in the car but have not bolted it on yet. It looks like it might be close to the y pipe on the exhaust and the brake lines. I know the y pipe gets hot. Do the brake lines get hot enough to melt the speedometer cable? Some pictures could be very useful if anyone has any.

Thanks

Don't let it touch the headers or exhaust pipe. Other than that, nothing else should melt it.

just as cowboy says. once you've got it hooked up you should have loads of room to play with. pushing it back into firewall or pulling it a bit out and rerouting it should get you clear from all exhaust/header
