fender bolts
Getting ready to pain the car. Got to thinking about how NOT to chip/break paint upon reassembly. will the use of thin Teflon washers under fender bolts and what not work?
I will be painting hood, deck lid, fenders , doors ect off the car. I painted the door hinges last summer and put doors back on a few weeks ago to check for fitment. Paint busted right off so i want to avoid this problem.
Paint PPG Deltron 2000 (DBC)
Thanks

The only place I used anything was where the front bumper wrapped around the fender. I used a rubber washer there between the bumper mount and the fender. The rest of it did not seem to be a problem for me. I did not have the doors off though. While the fenders and valances were on there were only enough bolts to hold them in place and when I reassembled I did not do anything special.
Wait a minute...I kind of take that back. A year ago when I removed the bumper mounts and ground all the rust off of them and the frame rail where they joined I did make some pads out of gasket material to place between the mounts and rails to prevent the paint from getting crushed.
HGC, i thought about using rubber or cork, easier to make on the fly but rubber rots and cork would hold water. I am thinking vary thin Teflon, maby .020 if i can find them.
Any one do something similar? or am i just worrying about nothing?

Mort, go to Mcmaster Carr:
www.mcmaster.com
And put this part number in the search box: 96371A604
I think that is what you are looking for and I may follow your lead.

I wouldn't be too worried about it, my 65 made it 45 years with only minimal surface rust issues by the bolts. If they start to rust, at least you will see it. Maybe the modern paint and epoxy primers will be more resistant to the sharp edge of the bolt.
Snake....... i Hate McMaster but they have most everything, thanks for the advice and Part Number. ill let you all know how it works out.
Weasel..... That is exactly what i am trying to avoid! busted paint and rust. Garage paint job can be good as pro but steps need to be taken to avoid issues.

I just reassembled a newly painted fender and used new bolts and star washers, if you turn the stars up right they stay in place and the bolt "clicks" like a ratchet in them and doesn't spin the washer- if you have star upside down they will spin and chip paint. It only took once to catch on, but that once hurt
why do you hate mcmaster?
i use them constantly for stuff at work when im designing something.
personally if you were wanting to do that id do try this part number:
95606A130
they are plastic washer, 5/16 ID 1/2" OD and 0.028-0.034" thick so it wont be as noticeable when put together and it wont be larger then the flange on the bolt head itself. those others are 1/16" thick which is rather thick for just wanting to protect the paint
