Clean & Re-Paint Engine
What are the steps to clean, and successfully repaint my 289. When I bought the car about two years ago, the previous owner had repainted the engine for me. Now its just screaming for attention (theres a few places where oil is visible). It's a daily driver, so what products or techniques would I use to clean it. Then after that, what kind of paint to use and how long should I allow it to dry. Thanks
Cleaning:
I'm not an expert but I hear Tide, hot water and elbow grease (aka scrubbing) works good.
I've always used a good can of engine degreaser and some plastic bags to cover electronics and carb, directions are on the can.
Far as paint goes:
I would guess you gotta tape anything off you don't want painted, use some kind of paint stripper to get the old paint off and goto the parts store tell them you are painting an engine and they can tell you what to and not to use I know it has to be high temp.
Don't know if that helps but thats about all I know, a few weeks back on the powerblock on Spike TV the guy on trucks did an episode about painting blocks I went to the website but there were only pictures but if ya look on line far enough someone prolly has a movie file you can download if you dont get the info you are looking for.

For the engine bay, it depends on how dirty it is. You could use a degreaser and high power washer, or use Simple Green and regular hose water. At any rate, you are going to have to use a wire brush and a scrub pad to get it really clean. Except for the headers, you don't need high temp paint. Just plain old Krylon works fine. Either semi-gloss or semi-flat both look good.
