I think epoxy primer is the best primer, it is a 2 part paint. You will have to mix the paint with a hardener. For my paint I bought it from TCP global. www.tcpglobal.com. They have paint they can mix from any year or model vehicle. Hope that helps.

I pressure washed it, then cleaned it with degreaser and wiped it down 220 sand. Shot 5 coats of Rustoleum Semi gloss on it. This way if you ding or scratch it, it is easy to touch up.

If you want to shoot it with your spray gun (and the rear end is out):
Pressure wash
Degrease
sand
epoxy primer
Chassis black paint Semi-gloss (Eastwood is good)
I voted for the rattle can method....

Like already stated, epoxy primer needs to be applied first on bare metal...
1 part of primer and 1 part of catalyst (hardener).
Put 2 medium coats, wait 15 minutes or so and shoot your flat black.

I used the NASON primer (Dupont off brand) and Blitz black Acrylic Enamel from John Deere.
$28 a gallon is a really good price and it's very durable.
You don't have to, but I used hardener in the paint as well for even better durability and to give it the semi gloss look...

Sorry, I don't have a better picture.

Default RE Help with painting!

I shot mine with chassis saver. Guaranteed to never rust. You can shoot directly onto bare metal if you choose. I used semi gloss, but they do have flat black I believe. It is pricey and needs to be shot with gun for best results. You can find it at any body shop supply company. Worked very well for me.
PS Make sure you use a respirator, as it has VERY strong fumes.

yes, the rear end is out. instead of sanding it down with 220, can i use one of those airline paint removers? or does sanding it down with 220 give the epoxy primer a surface to "stick" to? i figured after removing the old paint, its going to be bare metal so epoxy primer should be fine therefore eliminating the sanding.

The epoxy primer I used was the house of color stuff and it sticks to everything. Proper prep is always recommended though. I then sealed it and shot a single stage black on mine. I really like it and it matches the undercarriage too.

I used the 220 for the rattle can paint just to smooth out the surface.
If you are doing Epoxy and "doing it right" you really need to give something for the epoxy to bite into. 80 over the bare metal and then sand the epoxy with 180 to smooth.
Some epoxy does not like to be sanded. The PPG epoxy I used for the body paint was terrible to sand! It made little tar ***** that clogged the paper in seconds.

Check out Eastwood, they make great restoration supplies and specialty coatings. Look at the Chassis Black, I used it on my entire undercarriage.

You could take it to a sand blaster and have it stripped for pretty cheap too rather than sanding it by hand. That way you get everything off of it and start with bare metal.
