Default trunk lid spring

Since my car was painted the trunk lid springs won't hold the lid up. Could the weight of the paint be making a difference? Worked fine before. Any ideas?

Must have used lead based paint!

Just kidding. Did they remove the lid when it was painted? Perhaps the spring is not installed correctly?

The spring may have slotted brackets to accommodate different pressure to open the deck lid. This is so you can apply more pressure if a luggage rack is added. With time, the spring loses tension and after thousands of openings over 40 years, it's stretched out. Just to open and old lid, you have to put it on the tightest end. The paint guy must have put it on the middle slot or other end.

That was the long answer, lol. Grab some vise grips and move them.

My car had a wing put on it and the added weight wouldn't allow the trunk to stay open so I adjusted the spring. It was a PITA to twist it enough to allow the trunk to stay up. I have since removed the wing and now you have to be careful and hold the lid when opening so it doesn't fly back violently. My dad wasn't expecting once and it almost hit him in the face lol. I need to relieve some of the tension just haven't gotten around to it yet.
