Default Electronic Ignition Conversions

Hello,

I'm looking at changing the distributor or points on my '65 has anyone used an EI conversion from Crane Cams. This will go right into the same distributor without having to change the whole unit. I can included a picture for reference if needed...does this work? How is the performance?

If it's anything like the pertronix unit, it's a piece of cake to put in and set. Be sure the check instructions for the input voltage for the pick-up. If you intend to change the coil also, make sure to check the min input voltage needed there also. Stock 65-66 is about 9V, but some of these systems require 12V, so you may need to by-pass the resister wire under the dash. I believe it's the pink wire out of the back of the ignition switch. Add a T-connect at the bullet connector, and you have 12V going into the resistor wire, and 9V after the resistor wire, so you can use either as a source.

A guy I was talking to the other night said something about the petronix causing arcing with the voltage regulator (or something like that). I didn't get all the details. Anyone heard of this?

Nope. I've had pertronix for over a year.

if you do end up going with a pertronix, learn from my mistake and dont use a flamethrower 2 coil with an Ignitor 1 module, you will burn it up in 20 minutes of idling
