On my '69 I found that Wagner 6439 (I think that was the number) fit pretty good in the high beam bucket. That number (which I need to double check) is the same light that comes in KC Daylighters (400000 candelight power). I used a relay to hook them up. Not sure if they are DOT leagal though but I can see for miles now. Well, maybe not miles.

did you replace the rest of the wiring? I still need to finish my headlight upgrade... I have the relays but am looking for good harnesses in 12gauge which I dont think exist

I replaced mine with h4 halogen bulbs and made my own wiring harness.
If I had it to do over, I would buy this harness and relay kit:

12 gauge wiring with all the relays. It is $69.00
I had about 25 bucks in materials for the one I made.

do you know of a similar kit that works for hi-beams? or should i just not worry about upgrading the hi beams

I have not looked for a 4 headlight kits. It would not be that hard to adapt the schematic that was posted earlier to a 4 light system.
If you only used relays for the low beams, you would still have the old wiring choking off the current when you flipped to high beams. Best to do it all at 1 time...
Here are some pics of my install and parts used:

hiya. it's all been said before by Norm and others.
just go to an auto parts store and get 7" conversion bulbs. My car dealer always has them in stock for a fella who does that to Mini's. Picked it up, fits perfectly, looks good and shines good.
I have bought the relays and wiring already and they'll go in in the summer in case I'm bored eventually. they'll be the business then. But for the moment the H4 conversion lights made a major difference already

Well I'm having a new wiring harness put in my 69. I have those "blue headlights", if I remember correctly. I want to just get some white ones (Halogen) so they look more traditional.

Rebel let us guys that own 69's know about that bulb number. I don't use my high beams much but when I do I really like to see.

The H4 made a big difference on the 66. I had to go to relays because the passenger side headlight was dimmer because of the longer wire run over the radiator.
The H4 will draw more current and I was overloading my circuit I am sure. The relays made both lights equal and even brighter.

that seems a common issue. my passenger headlight has a seperate ground wire going directly to battery and I've seen the exact same with a 68. For this I assume this is 'normal' setup. I've just replaced the cable and that was my dim right hand headlight problem corrected. but I'd place those relays in anyway. just to do the headlight switch a big favour
