Turning lemons into lemonade......
The guy I bought it from said the previous owner replaced everything from the torque boxes forward, including the inner fenders. That means the VIN on the inner fender was removed. The body tag that contains the VIN was reattached it to the inner fender, but the state of Colorado still assigned a new VIN number. I got all the supporting documents from the Colorado State Patrol (the owner was recently transferred to Austin, TX from Colorado, so the car still has a Colorado title).
Apparantly the state of Texas takes a similar approach. The Vehicle Theft Division inspects the car and verifies the VIN. Since I have the original VIN number I was hoping the state of Texas would issue a title with the original VIN. Doesn't look like I'm going to get that to work out though.
I called Hagerty Insurance before I bought the car to make sure it's insurable. If it passes a safety inspection, they will insure it. Texas requires an out-of-state vehicle be inspected before issuing a State Of Texas title, so I had to do that anyway.

Looks nice. I wouldn't worry about the salvage title as long you can insure it. Here is something a guy I met did to protect his car from rising water. Sounds really dumb but he said it worked. He got a big plastic tarp and laid it out on the floor and then drove the car onto it. Then he gathered it up and tied it at the top over the roof of the car - like a giant baggie. He got about a foot of water and it did not get through the tarp. Won't help if the water gets over the top of the car, but less than that and it can work.
I just bought my convertible for $500 more than I got for my coupe. Would I have been better off keeping my coupe and getting a $6700 check, or spend an additional $500 and wind up with a convertible? Either way, I end up with a car with a salvage title. I was really happy with my coupe, but I'm thrilled to own this one now.
However, I do wish I'd have grabbed the instrument cluster and console before the tow truck arrived.
Weird about the title. When I transferred my title from IN to CO I had to get a vin inspection. I had the vin tag screwed to the front apron and the matching door tag. It was inspected at a local FORD dealer, no problems. Went down to the DMV and paid like $400+ to transfer the out of state title to CO. I had no problems and it is a regular title.
