Default wanna throw out the generator.

can anyone give me a run down on what needs to be changed or altered to switch from generator to alternator on the 64 1/2 260/289 motors????

i'm thinking it could be as small as just ripping the generator out and finding an alternator and bracketry to bolt in as long as the wiring to the solenoid and such match up, or am i way off????

as always any help is appreciated.......

I don't know... BUT... I did change over my 302 to an older 351 in my Ford F-150. The older motor had an externaly regulated alternator whereas the original 302 had an internaly regulated alternator. I could not find enough info in all my books or from my friends to make the new alternator charge. Last week I paid mymechanic 2 hours ($110) to figure out that I had not hooked up the wire that energizes the alternator to make it charge. My theory was try and pay if I failed. Well, I failed... and I payed. NOW IT RUNS!!!!!!!!!!!!

My advice is do not try it until you are 100% sure of what you are doing. Or are at least willing to pay a good electrical mechanic a couple of hours to figure it out if you can't.

Good Luck!

Ok I would get a harness from a mid 60's ford and splice it into your harness for the charging system and yes it is an external regulator. Best is to find a harness of a mustang, falcon, rachero or even a old bronco with a 289/302 and the brackets if you can find them.

Default wanna throw out the generator.

O.K.-it's kinda complicated. You have to run wires, as well as do some splicing behind the dash. In one of the "Mustang Weekend Projects" books, there's an article on how to do it, with a diagram. The easiest way I can tell you to do it is to switch out the wiring in your car to the 65 style(this could get expensive though). Good luck.
