POR-15 the entire inside floor, toe boards and firewall. Optionally place a good sound/heat barrier down over that and cover the seams with a foil tape. Then go with a newer style underlay and then the carpet over top.

amen to POR-15. for insulation there's a lot of options like fatmat, dynamat, eDead etc. They all differ immensly in price although I cannot see much of a difference in them. Some people even use stuff from a DIY when on very tight budget (self adhesive roof taring). never heard anything bad about the eDeads. couple of guys here use them
Check out James66 videos. There's one where you can here the difference inside and outside the car

lol our car was like a rattle can! After we got all the bad/dead metal replaced most of the car including the entire under chassis was cleaned to bare metal, degreased, etched & PORed. I then put 160sq" of the SecondSkin sound/heat product Damplifier Pro down. The car is a complete shell at this point and there is NO tinny or twang anywhere. Very solid thump where ever you hit the car.

The process is long and the SecondSkin products are quite expensive but the difference is huge. Can't wait to get it finished over the next few months and find out how quiet it makes the interior while driving.
