Default What steering box?

I have a sixty six (just a weekend driver) with power steering-thinking of upgrading the steering box....what is a good box at a good price....I want something a little tighter and a better turn ratio...

Thanks Scott

I believe the I6 cars used the same boxes as the V8 cars. If so, you'd need a steering box from a 65-66 GT or power steering car. The box will have a 16:1 ratio, which is quicker than your p/s box ratio (22:1 iirc).

I've always had the impression that the p/s cars got the 16:1 box from the factory. If that's the case, about your only option for other steering ratio's is to convert to rack & pinion. I think even the Flaming River replacement steering boxes use the same ratio's as the factory steering boxes.

There is no such thing as a "power steering box" for 65-70 cars. They're all simply gearboxes, some with different ratios. P/S and GT cars got the quick ratio boxes, non-GT m/s cars got the slower boxes. They're completely interchangeable as long as you stick in the same year range (except for '67).

I have the flaming river box and I run it MS. I am pretty happy with it. I have read that rebuilding the factory box produces results that are equal to or better than the flaming river gear box....I dont know if this is true or just some old fogies telling ghost stories...I can say the flaming river gear box is good.

Another option is to send off your current box and have it rebuilt. This gentleman here in Texas rebuilds boxes and has a very good reputation.
