Default distributer removal trouble

hey everyone, while removing the distrib i was unable to get to the hold down clamp because of a black housing that i thought was the air conditioner, thats attatched to the belts. i removed the hose on this and did not ralize it was preasureized. Fluid began spraying out that was a brownish milky substance. does anyone know what this is and how to get to the hold down clamp?

Al Gore will be very upset with you. That was the AC compressor, and what came out of it was the refrigerant, with its lubricant charge. Sadly, it is not necessary to remove or disconnect the AC to remove the distributor. In fact, if you turn the ball valves all the way in, you can remove the compressor without letting most of the refrigerant out of the system, just the small amount in the compressor. Expensive, but fixable. Chalk it up to "Lessons Learned".

I use a 12" extension and 1/2" socket, there is a slight angle, but it's usually OK. The best thing to do is use a distributor wrench. Works easily, every time.

Why are you removing the distributor? While it is off, you should have the advance curves adjusted. This is a critical and much-neglected tune-up item. I do these on a Sun machine, and I have never checked one, whether untouched original, or remanufactured, that was within limits. This adjustment can make the difference between a dog and a tiger.
