Default Ford 9" 3rd member thoughts

I need to replace the complete 3rd member for my 72 Mach with 28 spline axles, looking for a 3.89 or 4.11 Traction Lock dealer. I bought an ebay unit which I had in the car and drove it only a few miles before it went down the tubes.

thanks

I got my 28 spline 9 inch center section with 3.50 traction lock from ramustangs I believe was the seller name on ebay. I would say that it is done right.

I have a third member with a 3.89 and traction lock, 28 splines that I have had on ebay a couple of times. The traction lock and gears are brand new and it was set up properly. It does not have a fill plug and I think that has been an issue for people. It is yours for $500. It is fairly easy to add a fill plug and I was going to do that before I put it on ebay again. If you are interested, I will add one in the proper location.

That sounds like a good deal that Fakesnakes is offering. Thats about what I paid for mine. What gear ratio are you going to run instead fakesnakes?

Early axle assemblies (64-66) had the fill plug on the housing. I have a 66 housing and 69 carrier, so I have two fill plugs.

I was collecting parts and bought this pumpkin with a bunch of other parts from a friend. When I upgraded to the Boss 347 engine, I decided to go with 31 spline axle. Same 3.89 ratio, but a Detroit soft locker. It is behind a tko600 tranny.

Thats cool. Good call on making things stronger. I never heard of a soft locker before.

thanks for the replies, IF I was to change to a 31 spline is anything else needed besided the differential and axles? the housing that I have has the 'smaller' bearings. Fakesnakes, can you post up or PM a pic?

You might want to consider going with a Detroit True Trac instead of a T-lok, no clutches to wear out and the internal components are a lot stronger and more stable.

I think the T lock is plenty durable for street use. I like them because they operate smoothly. For a drag car that may not be the case.
