The True Trac operates the same way as any limited slip differential. But instead of using shims and a series of clutch packs, it uses a series of worm gears in 3 bores on each side of the unit, they respond to load from each axle and use friction within the bore to control differentiation. As a result you don't have friction clutches that wear out over time, so they last a lot longer than a clutch type. Carbon clutches are a much better choice in any clutch type LSD though, they last a lot longer. But with the True Trac you have hardly any moving parts, and you don't need any friction modifier. It's also a lot beefier so it's less likely to fail.
