Default motor pull

so now that class is over i have some time to work on my car... i am starting the restoration but before i actually do anything i want to know if my motor is original or not, because this will determine what road i take on restoring it...i know that the date code is located above the starter on the block, but would i be able to see it by simply removing the starter? or do i have to pull the motor just to read the date code? this is a very important aspect to my build up so i am willing to pull to motor just for the date code if i have to...

thanks

You can see the stamp with the starter removed but the engine in place.
Doing on it on creeper with a flash light is obviously a little more fun than putting it up on a lift though
