i think that's true for '68 and later blocks. before that they were two different engines - the 302 had a little longer cylinder than the 289.

Exactly right, the cylinder extended about 1/8" farther down into the crankcase.

Since the 289 and 302 heads were virtually identical, and even Ford put 289 heads on 302 blocks, in fact many late 67 and 68 289 engines used a 302 block to build 289 engines, as they were being phased out.

Stands for Appliance, and was a bargain brand. Actually, they were pretty good. A friend of mine had the imitation 'Cragar' all-steel wheels on a 70 1/2 Formula 400, and my brother still has his aluminum slots on a dune buggy. 35 years is pretty good for a 'bargain brand'.

I'm pretty sure the 289, 302W, and 351W (post-73-ish?) heads can all be exchanged. The 351W heads have a larger hole for the bolts but they're otherwise identical to the 302 heads. Seems like the early 351w heads had a different intake and don't match the 302 intake.

I've got a late model roller 302 that I'm considering using either my 289 or 351w heads on since it came with the infamous e6te heads.

There has been what I consider an old wives tale that 302 cylinders are supposed to be .020 longer than the 289 cylinders, people who have ACTUALLY measured have have stated that 289 & 302 cylinders are the same length....

Even if true, WTF will .020 longer cylinders do for an engine anyway.... (this is 2/10 of 1/10th,,, )

If your car is a coupe, the engine swap won't reaaly make a difference as far as value of the car is concerned, it will probably make some difference if the car is a fastback...but it wouldn't mean much to me because to me cars are meant to be driven....

Thanks for the info

And it really doesn't matter if it's a swap as long as it is in fact a 302. which has been confirmed by a friend. The Value is meaningless to me... I paid 1600 for it, and I'm not about to sell it anytime soon as I've been wanting one of these for some time it's not getting sold.

Thanks people!
