Default Popping

Hey I have a 71 mustang with a 302. Ive had a problem with a popping sound coming from the drivers side up in the engine someplace. Sometimes when I hit the gas (normally when just starting up or accelerating from a stop) The car will pop once sounding kind of like someone throwing something at some sheet metal. Normally the car hesitates like it is about to stall then either does so right after the pop or goes without a problem. If I ease onto the gas its normally not a problem only when I give it a little more juice. Its an automatic by the way.

Thanks in advance

See if the noise is during acceleration or on deceleration? My guess would be on deceleration after you let your foot off the gas.

If i was you, i would check the plugs make sure they are ok, check all your leads as well make sure they are on and all intact and make sure your not leaking exhaust from anywhere.

Could it be a backfire? Check the inside of the air cleaner and see if there are any black marks that look like it's backfireing through the carb. Also check for a loose or broken motor mount.

Sounds like you are pinging.. I allways thought that it sounded like marbles bouncing around in the exhaust,, check your timing. If it only does it on acceleration you may need to back off the timing a little.. But if its just poping once.... I dont know.

Its only on acceleration and it only does it once. Sorry I should have been a little more descriptive. If I acceleration slowly it doesn't do it at all. If I let on the gas then it does it but not all of the time. Its mostly when its cold or when I am going from a stop like if I had just stopped at a sign and then started going. If I get it up to about 20 and then hit the gas however had it doesn't do it either. I do know that is is coming from someplace under then hood and I'm pretty suer its on the drivers side but I'm not 100% on that.

Its pretty much from a stop I hit the gas it starts to go and then seems like its about to stall. It does a single pop and then either goes or dies. Sorry its a bit hard to describe.

I just took a look at it as well. I didn't see any marks on the air filter or the housing around the carb. Its a 2 barrel nothing special. I did notice that is seemed to be making noise. It sounds like it was sizzling and maybe a little fuel had overflowed recently.
