Ignition Diagnosis, pa-leeeze!
It's a 65 coupe with a 289. In Aug, 08 I replaced the stock points/cond with a Pertronix II and Flamethrower coil. Driving along, running like a top, it just died (posted thread two days ago but I have more info today). Car won't start.
- Coil sparks both directions (From coil and into dizzy)
- Carb spouts/coughs liquid gas - no smoke or flames
- Replaced cap/rotor hours ago with no change
- There's spark at the plug-to-wire connection but I can't tell if it's sufficient...seems weak and varies plug to plug.
- Attached timing light to see if I have enough voltage to light it and BAM, timing light does not "light" when cranking.
I think that's it. My diagnosis is the coil. Any suggestions? You've all been much help in the past and I want to say thanks to all in advance!
P.S. I've heard the Flamethrower coils are questionable. What coil would you suggest in its place?

I have to agree, oem style coils seem to last better than some brands. My brother in law's accell coil was a pos, as was it's replacement, both lasted less than 3 mo.
I recommend buying a stock style coil as a cheap means of trouble shooting at the least, and IMO as a viable perm replacement.
Most of the benefit of an electronic ignition will be in the better dwell characteristics. While a "super coil" will throw a harder spark than a stock replacement, the oem coil is more than sufficient.
IMO a stock duraspark coil might be the best comprimise...

Coil is definitely the first thing I'd suspect. If you go aftermarket, MSD coils are great, but they need a full 12V source. Otherwise, a good OE replacement coil (like Napa's Echlin brand) will work fine.
That said, it's still possible the Ignitor is fried. They're known to do that, unfortunately...
