Default tach with HEI distributor

thinking about buying a small tach to on my steering column, but i just put a HEI distributor in the car. how do i hook up the tach because the HEI distributor has the starter coil attached to the top of the distributor?

also i found a tach but it says only fits vehicle with distributor ignition, will this one work? or does that mean will only work with starter coil?

If I recall, green is usually the lead for the neg coil lead, if you see this, it's likely the lead for your tach. there's probably three pins or leads = power, ground, tach

I have the about the same setup. My coil is marked as to which lead goes where. Considering it's an HEI, and you don't have the tach yet, the one connector that isn't being used would be for the tach. No resistor needed between the coil, and tach.

HEI caps say "Tach" on them, labeling the tach lead...

Do you need pics? I have about 50 HEI's laying around. might be more..... Easy one wire right next to the 12v power wire, cant be simpler than that.

Tad is right, The "TACH" connection is right next to the "Ignition" terminal on the edge of the HEI cap.

The terminal is conveniently labeled...

Simply connect this terminal to the "Coil" wire on a typical aftermarket tach and you are good to go.

The purple wire is the "Tach" wire in this pic.

ya ,as tad and jmd say, the tach is clearly marked. it will work with any new type tach (current sensing), but probably not with the old ones (voltage sensing) like Rally pac
