Fixing up my steering... what parts?
Unless your ball joints and control arm bushings are really, really bad, leave them until later this year when you can afford springs, control arms, and roller perches. Jon's looking at doing the same thing fairly soon. As soon as Cuesta opens up their open lab, I should be able to pull your cars in one at a time and get everything knocked out. Cuesta has all the necessary tools, and I've got the Shelby drop template and drill bit. And yes, you do need a coil spring compressor to replace the ball joints.

And if you have that template and drill bit too then thats sweet, I was going to do that if I had to remove the springs, might as well while I'm down there
OK I might as well just stick to the tie rods and idler arm for now. I'll inspect my ball joints and other bushings, I know they are not really really bad though because my car still drives OK, just not great. I just want to take as much play out as I can because it feels a little unsafe, especially on the highway.
Where? Different specs for different areas.
The steering should have basically no play, although a little at the wheel bearings is ok. The gearbox should have no play in the middle. All bushings should be snug and deflect very little. The lower ball joints should have zero play in any direction. The upper ball joints can have as much as 1/4" of vertical (axial) play, iirc, but zero radial play.
