I need help regarding ignition switch
My ignition switch got busted , i was able to buy the front and back electric parts on discount auto parts for $20.00 but turns out that the pigtail that runs the switch in the back got burned and that is part of the whole wiring system of the car (mustang fastback - non GT-1968,c code , v8 2 Barrel) and that means that i would be forced to buy the whole thing ($500 - + ) any way to get it done cheaper??? Please help!!!
Luis,
I met you at The Tower shoppes several months ago. I'm Jay, with the black 67 F/B.
OK, let's see what you have, here. You say you were able to get the switch at Advance. That's good! Now, I don't know exactly what you mean by the "pigtail". There is a plastic connector, with several wires and a center threaded rod that plugs into the back of the replacement switch. Is that the "pigtail" you are referring to? Is the plastic connector broken (in pieces)? If it is, I can see why you're concerned!! But that's not an impossible thing to find. If they are not available from a Mustang retailer ( I haven't looked yet, but honestly, I don't remember seeing them in any of my catalogs)), then you should be able to get one used from a Mustang graveyard. There's one near you in Miami, If you need his name and address, just get back to me.
Worst case scenario, you'll have buy the plastic connector used, with the wires still attached (at least, that would be preferred, so you can see which wires go where) and splice the wires from your broken connector into the used connector. Are you aware that the wires in these type plug can be removed and re-inserted into another connector? It requires a small tool to release the wires from the old broken connector, then you just push them into the connector you just bought. That would eliminate splicing, it would just be a remove and replace operation.
Don't hesitate to get back to me if I can be of any more help.
