Default VIN Number help

I am looking at purchacing an excellent looking 65 fastback "A" code. the VIN Number in the engine comp. doesnt match the door or title. The numbers are exactly the same except the first character. Door and title say 5 but the eng comp has a 4. could this be a mis-stamp? the car seems to match both VIN's minus the first number

my 64 1/2 starts with a 5 on the fender. never seen a four at the start
what's the rest of the vin (last 7), that might give info if it's a 64 1/2 or not ... and what's the date code on door?

Welcome.

Something isn't right, the first digit should be a five.

Mustang Decoding Information

If it was an early '65 the fifth digit should be a D, later in the year it was changed to an A.

If the car is titled and has been registered I wouldn't worry too much about it, a lot of these cars actually have a dubious past. Look it over well for signs of having been welded or altered. Maybe at some point it had a Falcon fender apron installed and a door tag was created to match the vin to a Mustang.
