Default Transmission kickdown - what does it do?

Ive been looking at carburetor parts, and I keep seeing Ford auto transmission kickdown.

What does it do?

The kick down is for the automatic transmission. When you floor the car basically, the transmission will kick up into a higher gear. like if your in 3rd, the tranny will kick into 2nd. likewise if it's in 2nd it'll kick into 1st.

Whenever you punch the gas pedal to pass, it throws the tranny in the next lower gear to create more power to pass. Used only on the automatics.

Cars of today use an electronic solenoid to tell the transmission that it needs to down shift. Not long ago transmissions used vacuum to determine when to shift down and in the older fords they a used mechanical linkage (kickdown) to force the transmission into the next lower gear.
