Default Voltage Regulator

I am trying to replace an incorerect v. regulator on a 65 w/ a correct new reproduction Autolite regulator that I just purchased. It was running decent w/the black "no name" generic v. regulator.

I installed the Autolite exactly like the previous regulator. I got power to the courtesy lights, etc. But when I try to turn the ignition key, a get a "click", and then no power at all, completely dead. Is there anything I need to do or install differently?

What gives?

That wonderful ‘click’ is either the starter solenoid gone to hell (common in early fords), low battery voltage, and/or possible starter.

With your ignition key on, you can jump across the solenoid ( the big power wires) and see if your starter is getting any power. If the car starts, it’s the solenoid, if it doesn’t, or it is weak, it is the battery. If you see an arc/spark across the solenoid and no starting, it’s the starter.

Please wear rubber gloves if you are uncomfortable with this old shade tree mechanics method of determining the fault.

Best of luck [sm=usa.gif]

Thanks for the helpful information. I will do some trial and error.

Why is it that the cheap regulator works and the new one does not using the same set up? Maybe the new regulator is bad?

You can't tell if the VR is working until you get the car started. Your symptoms do not point to the VR, but to the solenoid or starter as mentioned.

The new v. regulator was bad. I bought a second "new reproduction" Autolite and it works. The best thing about it....not only is it correct and better looking, the amp gauge no longer dances all over the place and the interior courtesy lights stopped flickering!

Thanks for the input. I have to admit, I have about 4 other Mustang forums bookmarked, but I always seem to come here first seeking advice and information. I very rarely have to travel to other forums. The people in this forum are by far the most helpful and patient individuals I have come across in this hobby. Thanks and keep up the good work!
