floor pan or torque boxes

floor pan or torque boxes
While continuing the strip down on my 65 6 banger, I removed all the po patch work of sheet metal and found there is no torque boxes on this car. Seems to me I remember someone saying that the 6 cylinder cars did not have them. If they did not then what was the outer side of the skin? Was it just the floor pan extension that went to the firewall. My firewall floors are rotted out and I measure the floor pans I have and added the length of the firewall extensions and it will cover the rusted area. I need to know if the floor pans or the missing torque boxes acted as the outside surface to the road. Thanks Mike

The engine had nothing to do with torque boxes. All convertibles had front torque boxes. 64-66 coupe and fastback didn't. All 67 coupe and fastback had a left front torque box. All 68-70 had both.
If the car had torque boxes, they were the "surface". If not, the lower part of the firewall did the job.
