Default Hood rust

I have been stripping my hood and the rust hasn't been to bad except on the the channels underneath the bracing on the bottom side. Has anyone dealt with this? Do I have to remove the skin? Or order a new hood...

If the rust is superficial, banging with a plastic hammer and blowing with air pressure should do it, pushing cleaning brushes into the framing will help, too. If the rust is coming off in flakes, or pitting through in tiny holes, the hood is trash. Replace it with the "original tooling" hood.

it hasn't pitted and isn't coming of in flakes, but if i run my finger in the channel it is definitely rusty. i am thinking of dribbling por 15 in the holes and trying to work it around in there.... if i don't get complete coverage, will it pose a problem? could it eventually eat up through and come out under the new paint?

FWIW. I pulled the skin off of the frame on my hood and trunk lid. It was a bit of work but well worth it. Ford did not put primer on the inside of the frame or the hidden portions of the hood skins.

Prep it well by removing as much of the rust as you can with long cleaning and wire brushes followed by the pre por-15 prep. I'd recommend spraying the por with spray rods if at all possible for better coverage. Don't use rust converters if using por.

Here are some pics of removing the skin from my hood.

Step 1. Drill out the stop welds

Step 2. Carefully pry up the folded over skin lip all the way around.

Just takes time and patience. Definitely well worth the effort.

I don't think it took more than 3 or 4 hours to get the skin separated from the frame
