Default what mufflers should I get?

Hi all,

just out of curiosity. I currently drive Flowmaster 40s. I do like them and it has a very recognisable sound alright. my buddies hear me coming even though I'm not even the loudest of them all. they just know the sound.
However I believe they're holding back my engine. The only indication I have for that is that when I cut 2 holes in exhaust for H-pipe I couldn't help but running it with exhaust open for the fun of it (that was a few months back). The negine never revved so freely with the holes in there.
I need something that is as obnoxious loud as the flowmasters (I accept a bit more silent as well), but I want this thing to be heard on the road. Most important they should flow good (flow40s are not exactly known for that), not too pricey (i'd love to get away with less than 200$ for the pair), and I'd love if the new ones had more of a rumble (deeper sound) than the 40s

whatya think?

I don't know. My opinion is run what you like the sound of. Thats why I love the 40s for the deep sound. I don't know of anything that really sounds deeper.

I like my 40s and I don't think they hold the car back much. I ran it with open headers and the H pipe and its not much different. I think alot of it is in people's mind. They associate louder with faster. I bet running different mufflers won't give you any noticable gain in the butt dyno. Thats not to say that some other muffler isn't better, but I don't think its worth changing, especially on mild street setups like most of us have. It might be a different deal on a high reving high horse power engine.

Also, I have seen cars at the drag stip that did not run any faster of a time by running open headers versus mufflers.

Here is a chart that shows some dyno and decible numbers. You can also see that no mufflers made less power.

1.Flowtech Warlock (open) 374.2 hp/ 333.1 tq
2.Bassani Real Street 373.7 hp/ 333.8 tq
3.Hooker Maxflow 373.5 hp/ 333 tq
4.Borla XS 373.3 hp/ 332.6 tq
5.Magnaflow 372.8 / 332.5 tq
6.MAC 372.3 hp / 331.5 tq
7.Flowtech Afterburner 372.3 hp/ 330.1 tq
8.Hooker Aerochamber 372.1 hp/ 330.4 tq
9.Bassani 372 hp/ 333.5 tq
10.Spintech 371.6 hp/ 332.2 tq
11.Edelbrock Performer RPM 370.9 hp / 331.3 tq
12.Borla XR1 370 hp/ 334 tq
13.Flowtech Terminator 369.5 hp / 331.3 tq
14.Dynomax Ultra Flo 369.4 / 333.2 tq

Since your talking about how your car is running, how are you liking the Holley compared to the Edelbrock you had before?

Oh, by the way. My friend's uncle has a 65 F100 with a 460 that has been stroked and heavily modified. Its naturally aspirated. He runs regular 40's on it with 3 inch exhaust. They don't hold it back from running 10's in the 1/4. This truck also has full interior and is all metal (no fiberglass) and is street driven.

What size pipe do you have on the car, 2.25 or 2.5?

as for the carbs: i prefer the holley. either the holley has more talent than the edelbrock or I have more talent tuning a holley. i honestly don't know. but in the near future I'll get myself a demon or quickfuel 650 double pumper. i just missed out on a 180$ deal because the fella never replied to my emails if he'd ship to Europe as well (obviously me paying)

as for the exhaust:
one of them rattles when I bang it with my fist from below. so something inside has come loose or there's a lot of crap inside it from engine, which I can't really believe.

as for the flow: i really had the impression that with the 2 holes the engine would rev quicker and easier.

as for the flowmaster 40s. i don't really see how there's a deep rumble of them compared to other typical 302 exhaust on youtube.

i'm 99% sure it's 2.25" exhaust pipes

The most amazing exhaust available from the factory was the Arvinode™. It featured a pair of tuned, straight-though mufflers and two small straight through resonators. Some states were not amused. Too bad, because some really talented engineers put a lot of effort into it. I used to know one, although he has passed away.

You can hear it here:

Here are the mufflers:

Interesting. I like the note of those, although I think it sounds like a truck at idle. At higher rpm's, it sounds similar to my Hushpower II's, although a bit louder while cruising.

It's even "show correct" for about 6 months of 1965 models.

Kalli...when I put the crossover on mine it seemed to rev more freely...probably just the sound but I like it more than the H pipe.

You need a balance tube, H or X. It could also be your exhaust is too small. I run 3" with flow master super 44's.

2+2 amazing yokes. Tad is on to something when he says they sound like a truck, but i think they're still great. especially in idle and upper rpm range

eZ yours has the base at idle i was looking for

LCC: have H-pipe in there, makes a difference to the sound alright. the only way i can describe it is :balanced. but the note did not change

i'll try and make a video next week.
