Default Disc Brake Recommendation

Hi!

To make a long story short, I am having some real problems with an MP Power Brakes front disc brakes system recently installed in my '65 (8-auto.). Does anyone know of a manufacturer of a simpler front brake system with dual master cylinder? Sometimes I have found that going back to simpler, more factory-style parts works better, and this may be one of those times.

Thanks,
/s/ Chris

I'm guessing you got one of these:

The modern style straight rod types suck for reliability, no matter who you buy them from. The straight line pushrod technology just doesn't have enough sensitivity.

If you're buying from Master Power, or you want to exchange units, get this one:

It uses the same style booster and step-down lever as original equipment.

Thanks---the problem is that the pedal is way too low, and no amount of talking with MP Brakes, running their tests etc seems to solve the problem. You are right, though, about the power booster unit they sent me. Could you tell me a bit more about the problems with it?

Thanks!

You mean you have a soft pedal that goes to the floor but you don't get brake pressure? Are you sure you have the right size m/c?

We do get some pressure, and the brake doesn't go quite to the floor, but clearly something is not right. Frankly, at this time I would much prefer to have the drums back! The m/c was the one that came with the kit, and we are checking that out again. Another person suggested checking the gap between the pushrod from the booster and the one in the m/c. That's next.

Thanks,

/s/ Chris

Did you bench bleed the m/c and bleed the system completely?

Yes, but we're doing it all again just to make sure.

Thanks!

The rod between the booster and MC can be adjusted. I've seen it 3 times this year where they had everything together correctly, no leaks, properly bleed yet still not getting much pressure and the pedal was to the floor. Making a small adjustment to that booster to MC rod fixed the problem.

The headspace could be involved, but may not cure it. The drums and discs actually feel the same in normal driving. Your booster is the problem. I've tried the adapter block, to lower the attaching point, no use. Adjustable pushrod, some effect, but not a cure. The problem is there's just not enough movement of the pushrod for good sensitivity. The factory 64-66 unit used the link and lever setup I showed you, while the 67-up power used a special pedal with the pivot much higher and the pushrod pin somewhat lower.

You may just need an adjustable push rod, if the pedal is too low to start with. Some rods are adjustable and some are not. If yours isn't you can get something like this.
