Go for it. That is exactly what I'm doing.
There are certain things you need to do to make it work but most everything should bolt right up from what I've read and have been told by people. You got to change the harmonic balancer and flex plate with ones that will match each other so that it doesn't vibrate out of balance.
By changing to a certain Harmonic balancer to the correct one needed you can keep your stock pulley set up and most people will never even know you got a 5.0 under the hood.
I will also back it with a C4 to keep it as old school as I can.
You also have to go with adjustable motor mounts as well.
I've got a '95 5.0 with GT-40P heads on it and I will be switching the Cobra intake that is on it now for a carb set up.

I have a 302 on the way. But I kept it pre-1985. From what I read that era motor is balanced to 28 oz. So the flex plate, balancer , distributor gear, and timing cover are the same and can be reused. I think its like 5 or $600 cheaper going that route. It should be fine since the true driver of the car is the wifey. . But as a quick laugh I have spoted sound dampning material on the cheap. I pulled it from under the carpet today.

Okay obviously I now have holes from rust. but they are few and the size of a few jelly beans if. Has anybody tried a coat of por-15 and laying down like a fiber glass sheet under a second coat of por 15?

Thanks

Well , it gets even better , if you bring your old block and heads as deposit , you can buy a remanufactured 302 or 289 engine from advance auto parts for about $800 with a 2 year warranty or something like that
