Forgot, have the shop install new cam bearings as well.

 

hey guys,
I just changed the rod bearings today. I think the bearings are bad but not the source of the problem. After replacing them the 2 and 5 rods still tap when i thrust them back and forth. The only other thing it could be is the pins above. What do you guys think?

 

OK, I finally ran the motor. She runs like a 40 year old!
There is a faint knock the still exist somewhere in the block. I added castro high milage oil (5w-30), and 1 bottle of lucas oil stabilizer. Thing seems to be normal for the most part but the engine is surging and missing a little bit.

Does anybody know how to adjust the fan shroud? I cant seem to make it work. From time to time the fan keeps hitting the shroud.

Man, hard to tell without being there. Take a broomstick handle and use it like a stethoscope. Put one end up against your ear and put the other end on various places on the motor until you can isolate where the sound is coming from. I'm leaning toward it not being a bottom end knock though....

 

Hmmm...after listening again, maybe it's collapsed lifters. I noticed that when your rpm's came up the noise seemed to go away...which could be caused by a bad oil pump not putting enough pressure in the motor..which would also cause the bearings to go out prematurely.

How much gunk is in the motor? Oil galleys clean?

How did you adjust your rocker lash?

When I pulled the pan, there was 1/4 cup of sediment in the sump. It had metallic flakes in it. The oil pressure is just under half of the gauges travel at idle. When I rev or at fast idle its a little over half. I will put a gauge on it tommorow to verify.
The heads were just redone. The lifters and pushrods are new. The noise came down dramaticly when I changed the rod bearings. This I consider to be faint.

Before I changed the bearings it sounded like a grenade. Now it sounds like a 22, What you hear is nothing compared to before.
