Default .... unilite distributor ...weird

i've put in a unilite ditributor a good while back that came with the engine (to replace the pertronix)
i wasn't happy with the curve (it advances too fast), so i started taking it apart.
rotor off
vacuum advance off
and the module.
under that the breaker plate (if i might call it that) moves freely. i could turn it fully around if i wanted to and i can't pull the plate out

i have an odd feeling there's no springs and weights under it. anyone ever seen that before? unfortunately I didn't find any numbers on it to identify.

so i retarted ignition to 8 degrees and i have gobs of power on part throttle from 2500+. i'd prefer to check on it though
ultimately I'm going to get one of those crane procurve distributors, but does anyone know of the unilite? some of them without springs? and how does it advance?

[additional info. i just thought about trying to turn the shaft to see if there's a spring feel in it. Will do that when back]
