wheels
i have been looking to find out what the largest size tire can be put in the back of a 1966 mustang coupe. i have only seen up to 255's in the rear i am thinking 16 or 17 inch wheels for the street and would like 275 in the rear. i would prefer to not tub the back end, but just out of cuiousity how much would that cost. I would also like to get a 10 in slick in the back when ever i go to the strip in the future

I don't think 275 will work.
I have 235 60 15 on the rear of my 65.
I think there is a little more room on mine, so 255 might work.
Take a look at this.

Depends upon the wheel offset and if you want to roll your fender lips or not. We run 225/60-15's on the back of our '66 on 15 x 7 rims with 3.875" backspacing and it's a tight fit to the fender lips (Ours aren't rolled).
275's fit fine as long as the back isnt lowered excessively. I have 17X8 with a 4.75 BS. I couldve went a little wider on the wheels and changed the offset. I just got a pair of 26X11.50X17 et streets so i'll see how those fit.
With 17x8 rims with 4.75 backspacing my experience (and I believe others has been):
255s - roll the lips and you are pretty much done:

275s - roll the lips and if your rear aint centered...they aint fitting. Also required hammering inner wheel house slightly (after I perform modifications to center my rear properly)

thanks for all the info. i am glad to see that 275 can fit without tubbing the rear end. 275's is near a 11 inch tire so when ever my car sees strip time i won't have to worry about hooking up.

so all your saying is that 275s fit as long as the wheel is centered, lips are rolled and the inner wheelhouse hammered a little bit it will work? did you lower the car any and what are is the sidewall height, 45's?

You might also want to consider how much rotating mass is in the larger wheels. You might get better results with a slightly narrower tire/wheel combo that has a sticker tire. At one point, I ran 315's on the back of my Mach but found that I was quicker off the line and accelerated better with a 275 tire that sticks better. The larger tire and rim combo's rotating mass more than offset the traction advantage.

Personally I wouldn't get too bent out of shape trying to run 275s on the 65/6. On an 8 inch rim they will have the same contact patch as the 255. The only reason I have 275s is because those are my drag radials for the strip.
