do it yourself, it is not as hard as these companies make it out to be

take the thing apart, make sure not to lose any of the *****, take the box to a machine shop and get them to put it in their hot tank.

after that it is just a matter of putting in a couple of new bearings and a few seals

So my question is will the rebuilt box out perform a new Flaming River box in terms of steering effort and free play? OR does the 500.00 FR box remain superior?

you can rebuild it yourself and make it perform just as good as Flaming River, but you need a special torque wrench to get it dead on the money right

you are supposed to tq the sector shaft nut (i guess that is what you call it) to 5-6 ft/lbs

i didnt have a tq wrench that could do that (it would have to go over the steering shaft) so i set it by feel of hand, when you turn the steering box from lock to lock there should be a stiff spot right in the middle (where the wheels would be pointing straight), this helps to keep the wheels straight while you are driving

Default Just leaky

Just for info, mine steers great, it just started dumping fluid, I wonder if i can just replace the seals and call it a day?

I also wanted to know if anyone can weigh in on the Shelby or GT? box vs the standard box, it boils down to 4 vs 5 rotations turn to turn, deosn't seem like a huge difference. Anyone???????

I suppose the Flaming river manual box is 4 turn to turn? It is 500 bucks, yikes????

That's too cheap to mess with doing it yourself unless you just want to have that "I did it myself" feeling.
