The 5 turn 22:1 box came in non-GT m/s cars. All GT and p/s cars came with a 4 turn 16:1 box. There are some minor differences between an actual p/s box and a GT manual box, but for all practical purposes they're interchangeable.

I have a 22:1 box in my '67 daily driver, along with a roller idler and roller spring perches. Steering effort is moderate at low speeds, but as long as you're not a 100lb little girl it shouldn't be any problem. Feedback at speed is good. The only problem I have with it is having to spin the wheel so much while trying to turn. It's annoying at low speeds and it makes high speed cornering a nightmare.

I have a 16:1 box I'll be sending out for a rebuild as soon as I can afford it. I'm willing to sacrifice some driveability for increased performance. Parallel parking will definitely be a chore, but I'm sure I can handle it.

I'm not saying a 16:1 box is necessarily better, just that it's better for me. You'll have to make that decision on your own.

Default Thanks

Thanks for the reply, ref the quick turn box. I think I may just go to a 16:1 box for the same reasons, I have to turn 88 times at low speeds just to get outta some spots. They are not cheap though, I am gonna inquire to that company in Texas as to weather i can give them a 22:1 core for a 16;1 rebuild??

My buddy told me about a somewhat of a power asist system that uses a manual steering drag links ( not the same linkages with the cylinder and the control valve attached) and a steering box that has a inlet and outlet for the power steering pump. Supposely it's suppose to handle great but, I've never seen one for a classic mustang. Has anyone else heard of it?

There was a vendor that posted here a few months ago with a bolt-in integral p/s box. If you do a search, you might find it. First I've ever seen of a bolt-in unit, though.

Borgeson. They are the same 16:1 ratio gearbox as the OEM 4-turn box. But the hose connections are on the top, and will not clear the upper arm of the stock clutch equalizer.

What you will want then is an HCC AW box that can be found in any PS 65-66 Mustang (this box can be used with no need for PS.) That will give you the 16:1 ratio, then either rebuild it yourself or send it to stangerssite, if you still want quicker steering then you should give Branda Cobra a call for one of their quick steer pitman and idler arms (and yes they are the cheapest out there.) You can also get a roller idler arm bearing from Mustangs Plus for about $40. I also chose to get a Pro-Motorsports bumpsteer kit because not only does it address bumpsteer but also quickens steering a bit by moving the tie rods forward about an inch on the spindles.

HCC AW box $??

Stangersite Rebuild $140

Quick Steer kit $140

Roller Idler bearing $40

Pro-Motorsports Bumpsteer kit $260

You don't have to do them all at once but this is a pretty nice set-up that I believe would easily rival any rack and pinion kit out there plus with a quicker steering ratio.

This complete set-up would cost you about $560 plus the price of the steering box which I picked up for $40 at a Mustang graveyard.

You need an inch/pound torque wrench to adjust the box.
There not that costly, but with the parts, Stanger is a pretty good deal.

I have an inch/ pound torque wrench and I will still go to Stanger.
