Question Gas Leak - question

Last night I smelled gas strong by my 65 mustang. I looked under the back and there was a spot where it was dripping to the ground slowly. It is leaking near the hose area of the tank. There is a slear hose conencted to it going to another line which I assume is a metal line - was dark and could not see well. So I do not know if it is the tube connection or the gasket to the whole part going into the tank. I guess I may replace most of the parts. The tank is only a couple years old as well as the other parts from the previous owner.

I can't remember what i saw last night - does the tube connect where the sender unit is also? Or is that another spot on the tank? Any suggestions where to start? Hard to tell with it coming out so slow. Of course, I did not bother to drive it today since it is my daily driver to work since my truck (02 Avalanche) transmission needs rebuilding now. I get to share the minivan with my wife - yeah!

Thanks,

Warren

You are correct, the sender seal may be leaking, as can the hose connecting ghte sender to the steel line. I have heard of senders leaking through the electrical connection, but this usually happens right away, not two years later.

I have never heard of clear gas line. If it is really clear it may not be gas line and it might be deteriorating and leaking. Gas line is typically black. It has to be gas line other types of line will not work.

Um, if the hose is clear plastic it's unsafe and should be replaced with proper fuel hose.

I thought it was a little strange that it was clear also. Normally the black lines that are for gas will say "GAS" on the line itself. I'm almost positive this is a 5/16" line so I'm going to replace the line first and see. What I hate is I JUST filled up my car with gas! So I have to syphon it out first.

You can probably use the hose being replaced to drain the tank if you wish.

I've replaced them without draining the tank but you have to be quick and it can be messy.

Me too. Nothing like an armpit full of gas to make your day extra special.

I bought the hose assuming it is 5/16" which I'll find out. I'll try doing it without draining it. I'll plug the end of the new line first and then swap it with the old line at the tank. then remove the old line from the metal fuel line and attach the new one there. My only problem is it will be hard to get under the car where it will not get on me. opefully there is enough room to the side under there. I'm not a small person!! I'll be doing it this Saturday and will post the results. I'm hoping it's just the line. Maybe I'm wrong but I have never seen clear fuel line before which is on the car now!

I've done it that way, just use a small Vise-Grip to clamp both the old and new hose, wear eye protection, well-ventilated space, tape the new clamp on the new hose first, stay out from under it, and be real fast. Do it right, and one paper towel will be enough.
