MSD boxes provide a preset pulse to the coil primary therefor the actual dwell of the points or Pertronix is of no use.
Pertronix with variable dwell with MSD box is also of no use.
Also Pertronix can't burn up a coil when using an MSD box.

There are more good reasons to invest in a CDI box of about any name brand manufacture.

Pertronix 1 or Mallory or whatever and a CDI box and a decent coil is a great start in addition to the new distributor.
Get some good plug wires, open the plug gap to 45 and you are in business.
Thanks Coupester! Should I consider a new coil in this job? I am currently using a Flamethrower coil, but I just read at the Pertronix site that it's designed for use with an inductive ignition systems, and that the Flamethrower II is for CD ignitions. Actually, I just found the answer, as the MSD site has a handy compatibilty chart:
http://www.msdignition.com/products/coils/
MSD products are considerably easier to get close by. I have to go twenty miles away to get Pertronix!
Thanks Again,
Brian

Depends on your budget at this point.
A standard coil will be improved with CDI. An E-core coil is better, with CDI, but not required. The coil is also easy to change later.
You haven't mentioned plug wires. Spend money on wires, get the better coil if you can afford it right now.
Re-gap your plugs.

I've got the large gray Ford stud type cap with the adaptor and larger rotor. I think it's a Dura Spark. As for wires, I'm using the black 9mm FRPP set. I'm going to pick up the MSD Blaster 2, 3 Series coil and new spark plugs (not sure what brand/model) tomorrow afternoon.
Thanks Again,
Brian

I went with another choice that hasn't been mentioned yet. I put an Accel Street Billet Distributor and an Accel coil. It keeps roughly the stock look, and I've been very happy with the performance. The distributor is a mag pickup electronic ignition distributor (no extra ignition box needed) with an adjustable vacuum advance and the coil is an OEM style coil similar to the Pertronix Flamethrower. Here's the link to the distributor http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ACC-52201/

Here's what it looks like installed:

I used an inside distributor Points Eliminator kit from Accel a few years ago. Being mine is a 45 year-old car that is driven (almost) daily and long road trips in the summer, I got ticked off when I had trouble finding a spare (proprietary) rotor. (yeah, I'm funny like that!) I called Mr. Gasket/Accel tech support, and they were less than helpful. I yanked it and replaced it with Pertronix Ignitor, which allows me to use any rotor I want. I dont use any Mr.Gasket/Accel products.
I'm sure yours is a better thought out product. Just make sure you can get replacement parts wherever you may cruise.
Cheers,
Brian

I've already replaced the rotor once. Got it from my local Advance Auto parts with no problems.

I'd like to hijack this for a moment.

Can you guys recommend a junkyard distributor? Back in the day, I remember installing a distributor from a late 70's ford something into my 65 289. That distributor workes with a blue ignition module. The color was identified by the color plastic locking the wires into the box. I have a motor I am trying to sell complete and would like to upgrade from the points distributor while spending the least amount of cash.

Thanks for the help.
